To find out how to plan your ideal day in Mykonos read this short article which tells you where you need to be on the Island, when to be there and how to get there. This is your 1 day guide which will make you feel like a seasoned Mykonos visitor from the moment you set foot on the Island. Read on for for a minute by minute guide to enjoying Mykonos...

Morning

Most people get up when they want depending on the night before. Typically breakfast in the hotels consists of bread and jam and instant coffee. They’re not being cheap that’s just the way it is. If you decide to have breakfasts at one of the many little cafes then the choice is more appetising and usually includes Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit and honey. Cooked breakfasts are rarely on the menu because of the heat. Breakfast is also served at most of the beach restaurants.

Getting to the beach

You haven’t come all this way to sit by a pool and the beaches are stunning. There are a number of options to get there. Some people hire a moped but you will see a disproportionate amount of tourists with broken arms etc…so it’s very high risk! You can easily hire a car and it’s probably best to do this in advance. They’ll bring it to your hotel for you.

The best journey to the beach sounds like a real drag but it’s is really quite magical…

Go to the bus station in the centre of the town and get on a bus to Plati Yiallos. The buses leave on a strict timetable (it’ll seem like chaos but it isn’t) every half hour. If you get there early you get a seat, if you just make it in time you stand. It costs a few Euros and takes you on a 20 minute drive to the other side of the Island. Here you follow the crowd to the harbour where you pay for a single or return boat ticket. There’s a small fishing boat waiting for you. The best views are got by sitting on the top but there’s always an argument with the old fisherman who ultimately is trying to make sure he has a clear view. Either way you’ll sit where he tells you and either way you’ll love it. The journey is about 30 minutes to Super Paradise and it stops at other beaches also en route.

Alternatively you can get a bus direct to illya beach and many others.

The beaches

Many hotels have fantastic pools with great views so you may choose to spend the day there. Poolside bars will usually serve simple food …omelettes, Greek salad, yoghurt, toasted sandwiches.

Super Paradise is the most famous gay beach. Gay guys and gals get off the boat and turn left and straight guys and gals turn right! Sun beds and parasols are available on the beach at a price. This tends to be a party beach so expect a certain noise level.

On the ‘straight’ side there is a great and relatively inexpensive taverna. We strongly recommend the spag bol. It’s served canteen style and you sit outside under a canopy with great views across the bay...there is a choice of other restaurants here also
.
At around 4pm people start to head up towards the beach bar which is a short climb up the hill overlooking the beach. The music starts pumping around the pool which is carved out of rock and there’s a good ‘tea dance’ atmosphere. The views are great and this is a ‘must do’ while you’re in Mykonos. Remember to keep an eye on the last boat. A word of warning …the toilets here are foul. If you want a pee it’s fine, if it’s anything else just go home.

Ilya

This is typically known as the quiet beach and also more nudist. Again there are beds and parasols to hire and also cabana boys will bring drinks and sandwiches should you need them…it can take them a while as there’s quite a walk and no matter what you order you always seem to get a club sandwich! There is a restaurant on the beach which is great.  It’s waiter service but still swift so you won’t loose too many minutes from the sun. This is a great place to ‘chill’ and we would also recommend it for an early evening meal as the views of the moon rising over the mountains are stunning.

All the beaches on the island are beautiful and vary from full leaded, music pumping party havens to secluded ‘Shirley Valentine’ little coves.

After the beach

Most people go for sunset drinks and the options are endless. However there are some suggestions below:

  • Tea dance on Paradise and Super Paradise beaches. A bit like a Club 18 – 30 party, but only for the beautiful. Expect loud music, the briefest of beachwear and a buzz that’ll keep you smiling into old age.
  • Castro’s is a beautiful bar in Little Venice that literally hangs over the sea, it plays classical music and serves powerful cocktails while the sun sets behind the view of the Greek islands set in a crystal clear Aegean. It gets busy but most people just find a seat and gradually move towards the veranda windows as the evening progresses. It’s a social place so expect to sit and chat with other people. Castro coffees are a favourite but very alcoholic! Do not miss this either for sunset or for romantic evening drinks when it’s much quieter.
  • If you find Castro’s packed try Veranda bar next door. It’s the same great position, quieter but somehow not quite the same as Castro’s.
  • Hotel Elysium is a predominantly gay hotel which has a renowned  tea dance around the pool. Spectacular views across the Greek Islands, due to the hill you need to climb to get to it. Getting back down never seems to be a problem. We are reluctant to recommend this hotel as for the past few years the owners have a habit of taking bookings and then cancelling and re-housing guests on the day they arrive! Not a nice man running this hotel and we certainly would not visit it. They’ve ruined too many people’s holiday and seem to have no guilt about it.

Gym

If you want to work out try Bodyworks. Even though this is the only proper gym on the Island it is fantastically well equipped and also offers a good range of sport supplements. Discount voucher available by hitting book now button. Alternatively some of the more expensive hotels include a gym.

Dinner

If you are planning a big night out you may fancy a main meal on the beach and then a light supper in one of the many cafes that litter the streets.

If you want to make the evening meal an event in itself there are plenty of stunning restaurants and unfortunately many have stunning prices. Rather than provide you with a comprehensive list of places which you are unlikely to be able to find we suggest allowing yourself plenty of time to stroll around the streets and choose the one that suits you.

Night Life

Again there are thousands of bars to choose from and each season and sometimes each week they’ll change in popularity. Also trying to give directions to anywhere in Mykonos is impossible so we’ll just tell you the places and you’ll have to ask as you go along. The suggestions below are a good first night option, but you soon discover you own favourite tavernas:

Castros – We've mentioned this for sundown but it’s also a lovely mellow place to go to for a romantic/chilled evening or for a drink or two after dinner. It is much less crowded in the evening so you should get one of the best widow seats. If you’re looking for action this isn’t the place but if you want a really beautiful place and somewhere to chat and relax it’s the business.

Piano Bar – Very busy Piano bar with cabaret ‘star’ singing camp show tunes. Good fun for a start to the evening and a bit alternative once you’ve done the main bars.

Portos – This predominantly gay bar is where everyone goes for the start of the evening (around 11pm). The bar is very busy so most people stand in the pretty lane outside. There is a waiter service here if you want to avoid queuing at the bar. Very busy but you’ll meet everyone here at some point.

The Square – After Portos this is where everyone goes. Basically there are two bars on ground level and two disco bars above them. Again predominantly gay but on this island you’re as likely to be stood chatting to retired couple from Athens as you are to newly weds from Newcastle.  Most people buy there drinks in the bar and then stand in the square admiring each other until they go home or stagger upstairs for the ‘discos’. A really fun atmosphere and you’ll find yourself here most nights whether you plan to or not.

After the Square the most famous after hour’s club is the Yacht Club which is open until dawn. Usually there is a party at Cava Paradiso which a taxi ride away is. This is a stunning open air club carved out of the rock and holds amazing views across the sea. If you fancy one late clubbing night try to make this your venue, it’s an experience you won’t forget. Things get going late here (check each day for details) in order to catch the stunning sunrise.

…up next morning and off to the beach with a cheery smile and tell everyone you had a quiet night in.
