Barcelona

Barcelona

Barcelona is the Catalan capital and the second largest city in Spain. There are two official languages spoken in Barcelona: Catalan, generally spoken in all of Catalonia, and Castillian Spanish. Its history, location and climate make this an unequivocally mediteranean holiday destination. In any season of the year, Barcelona basks in the sun. You can eat in open-air restaurants or have a drink on the terraces, by the shores of the Mediterranean sea.

Nowadays Barcelona is the result of industrialization during the second half of the 19th century, the 1888 World's Fair and of course the 1992 Olympics. The olympic harbour provides excellent conditions for water sports.

Gyms in Barcelona

Gyms in Barcelona are plentiful and while there are lots to choose from we have selected a range of gyms and health clubs to suit most tastes. Some are a little more basic than others and some are just an exceptional spa experience as well as a fitness center…Holmes Place!

If you know any other great gyms, fitness centers or health clubs then please let us know.

We have a special deal with both the Holmes Place fitness centres in Barcelona which offers excellent health club and spa facilities. If you are looking for gyms elsewhere in Spain check out the Spanish Gym Visit directory.

Beaches

The beaches are surprisingly good for such a huge city. Both sand and sea, are tested daily, and all beaches have disabled access, lifeguards (in season), sun beds and showers.  A list of some of our favourite beaches can be found below:

Nova Icaria
This is the nearest beach to the Olympic marina, and so very popular. The wide golden sand beach is served by three spotless exemplary beach bars, two restaurants on the promenade behind and many more bars and restaurants just a few minutes away.

Bogatell

This long beach joins the Nova Icaria and is edged by a stine walkway poular with joggers, cyclists and roller balders. There are no bars but three restaurants.

Mar Bella
The nearest metro is Metro Ciutadella Vila Olímpica and then a 20 minute walk from there. The beach hosts a school and hire centre for wind breaking and Barcelona’s only nudist beach (behind a hill of bamboo).

Barceloneta This popular beach is both wide and long and becomes San Sebastian. It has a series of fast food and local restaurants. Popular with both Catalans and tourists so expect noise, some crowds and a sense of fun.

Barcelona Sports

Anyone interested in sport should attempt a visit to the Estadi Olímpic
(Passeig Olímpic 17-19, Barcelona. Phone: 00 34 93 426 2089)
The Olympic Stadium originally built for the Great Exhibition of 1929, and renovated in time for the 1992 Olympics provides seating for 70,000. Next door and just downhill stands the futuristic Palau Sant Jordi Sports Palace. The structure has no pillars or beams to obstruct the view, and was built from the roof down - the roof was built first, and then hydraulically lifted into place.

Some of the main sports events in Barcelona are the Conde de Godó International Trophi. A tennis tournament which takes place every April. In May there is the Formula 1 Grand Prix which takes place at Montmeló.
Several regattas take place throughout the year and sailing and other water sports can be enjoyed form a number of loactions. In the winter months there are several ski reorts in the Pyrenees (Girona, Lleida), which are easily accessed from Barcelona.

Shopping

The best shopping areas in central Barcelona are Passeig de Gracia and the streets to its southwest, including the Bulevard Rosa arcade just north of Carrer d'Arago, and Barri Gotic streets such as Carrer de la Portaferrissa, Carrer de la Boqueria, Carrer del Call, Carrer de la Llibreteria and Carrer de Ferran, and around Placa de Sant Josep Oriol.

The winter sales start in early January and the summer sales in early July  The big department stores, including the infamous El Corte Ingles and shopping centres open from around 9am until 9-10pm but are closed on Sundays. Some independent shops still recognise siesta time and close from around 2pm to 4pm.

Some places to visit in Barcelona

La Rambla
Five separate streets strung end to end, Las Ramblas is a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard packed with buskers, living statues, mimes, itinerant salespeople selling everything from lottery tickets to jewellery and a noisy bird market.

Barri Gotic
The medieval Gothic buildings northeast of La Rambla form the heart of the old city of Barcelona. The dark streets link with squares, and are scattered with plenty of cafes and bars..

Museu Picasso
The most popular museum in Barcelona housed in three beautiful stone mansions on the Carrer de Montcada.

La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia is the unfinished cathedral of Antoni Gaudí and is perhaps the most impressive sites to visit in Barcelona.

La Pedrera
One of Gaudí’s most recognisable masterpieces. On summer weekend nights the roof is lit and open for spectacular views of Barcelona city.

Some Fiestas in Barcelona

Sundays - people gather in front of the cathedral to dance Sardanas.

6 January – Feast of the Epiphany

23 April – The fiest day of the patron saint of Cataonia, Saint George or Sant Jordi. The day is celebrated by gifts of roses and books and so the shopping streets in Barcelona seem to be with book stands.

23 June – This I the eve of St John’s Eve of Saint John's: On the 23 June, the summer solstice is celebrated with big bonfires, firecrackers and fireworks, and people eat the traditional "coca de Sant Joan" (a pastry).

11 September – La Diada, a holiday in Catalonia.

24 September – The day of La Merce, the fesitival of Barcelona’s patron saint. The La Mercè festival takes place over this week: A range of activities are organised including the magical fire breathing dragons ( Correfoc), Castellers,  the imposing human towers that can reach as high as 9 floors and a magical firework and music exhibition, next to the Montjuïc fountains.

12 October - Columbus Day

1 November – All Saints Day

6 December - Constitution Day

8 December – Feast of the Immaculate Conception
