Ibiza is a small island lying off the coast of Spain and only a two hour flight from most major European Capitals (London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan, Zurich. Most of the population is centered in and around the three major towns: the capital Ibiza Town, San Antonio and Santa Eulalia).
The Summer season runs from the 1st of May until the 31st October, although in recent years more hotels are offering all year accommodation. The weather is the main reason for selecting Ibiza for your next holiday. In addition the air is clean and clear and skies are of the deepest blue. The summer is perfect for lazy beach days, and sports and watersports abound. In the evenings you’ll only need a cotton shirt while sipping cocktails or eating Al fresco.
The island is surrounded by incredible beaches and secluded coves. Many of these are easily accessible and with a car or small boat there are many more secluded coves available and one of the joys of this island is discovering one of these little gems.
Ibiza's waters are amongst the cleanest in the Mediterranean, many of the beaches are continually awarded the coveted EEC Blue Flags, and the combination of soft, golden sand and warm, crystal clear waters is hard to beat. August is the fullest month, when it can get very crowded on both beaches and roads.
Dine on the beaches by the light of the stars, sipping chilled white wine and listening to the gentle sounds of the sea; enjoy the tastiest Spanish and international specialities on the shady terraces of beautiful country restaurants; soak up the atmosphere of Ibiza by night in the romantic, pave side restaurants of the Old Town.
Sport in Ibiza
Tennis and Golf
Fabulous weather and long summer days are perfect for tennis and golf enthusiasts. There are tennis courts scattered around the island, and many hotels have their own courts for hotel guests. Ask at your hotel reception for information about courses and tournaments
Club de Campo Tennis and Sports Club – This is the largest tennis club on Ibiza. Only 4km from Ibiza Town and the airport, the Club de Campo facilitiesare open all year round.
Golf - Roca Llisa, near Cala LlongaIbiza's only Golf course has an 18 hole course, a 9 hole course, and a driving range and bar.
Club California Gym
Can Sires Horse riding, near San Antonio – Is owned by Jan who has more than 20 years experience teaching. She has classes at all levels of jumping, dressage and hacking. Her horses (including Arabian) are extremely well kept and matched to your riding ability.
Water temperatures range from 18º C in May to 26º in August making the island ideal for all sorts of watersports, including waterskiing, jetskiing, sailing, windsurfing, parasailing, bananaboat or even a relaxing pedalo.
Most of the larger beaches have kiosks where you can rent pedaloes and have a go on a banana boat. There are several sailing schools around the island (Playa d'en Bossa, Las Salinas, San Antonio, Cala Martina, Cala Pada) offering Catamaran hire and occasional windsurf hire (you will probably need a licence). There are also several beaches offering waterskiing and jetskiing (San Antonio Bay, Cala Bassa, Playa d'en Bossa, Santa Eulalia) and parasailing. More information can be found in our beaches section.
Windsurfing and sailing….
There is rarely enough wind for planing conditions in the high season (but easily enough for beginners). In early and late summer, the South wind (Scirroco) can pick up to a good force 4 once a week, and the West wind (Mistral) sometimes comes howling in at force 6.
The most popular beaches are Cala Martina, Cala Conta and Playa d'en Bossa. Of these, Cala Martina is the easiest to surf with plenty of flat and shallow water. Playa d'en bossa is all sand, but choppy when the South wind blows directly onshore. Cala Conta is for the more advanced surfer, and is trickier to get in and out. A shorty will be enough in the high season months of July, August and September (also gives good protection from the sun). For earlier and later months, as well as winter, think about taking a longer wetsuit, especially for the legs.
